The Nemasys Range: Vine Weevil Killer
What is Vine Weevil?
-
recognised as a major pest of container plants and its attack often leads to the demise of container plants.
-
The adult Vine Weevil feeds on the plant leaves from the beginning of summer and takes U shaped notches out of the leaves. It is about 1cm, black in colour with drab yellow spots. It is nocturnal and unable to fly. Amongst its favourite plants are Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas as well as any herbaceous plant.
-
The larvae are the real problem as they attack the root system of the plant. The larvae can grow to be about 1 cm in length and are a creamy white crescent shape with a dark head."
-
Although most damage appears during the growing season, vine weevils can still be active in the greenhouse where you are sheltering not only susceptible plants from freezing temperatures, but vine weevils as well
-
The pest is present throughout the year and nematodes should be applied in the garden from March to November (as long as the temperature is above 5 degrees C) . IF UNDER COVER IN THE GREENHOUSE NEMATODES CAN BE APPLIED AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR
-
ALL VINE WEEVIL ADULTS ARE FEMALE AND CAN LAY AROUND 1,500 EGGS EACH SO EARLY TREATMENT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY AFTER A MILD WINTER
The nematode steinernema kraussei is a naturally occuring parasite of vine weevils, which seeks out the larvae and enters the body cavity and feeds on the larvae in turn generating more nematodes to fight other larvae. It is totally safe to children, pets and wildlife.
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer will kill the larvae present and protect against further larvae damage for several weeks. If you have a minor infestation, one treatment may be sufficient, but if the problem is more serious, treat again during the spring as well as the autumn.
Horticulturalist and journalist, John Negus, speaking of Vine weevil says"Vine weevil is endemic in the UK and tell-tale 'C'-shaped notches on leaves are a clear sign that you need to take action. Using Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer breaks th pests life cycle by killing the voracious larvae that feed on the roots. It is the larvae that pose the greatest threat."
Nick and Sheila Chandler control vine wevil on their nursery, The Old Withy Nursery in Gweek, Cornwall. Sheila says "Plants in containers are especially vulnerable because they have a captive root system and in a nursery we have pots galore. When nematodes are applied positive results on infected stock are apparent within a coulpe of days. Vine weevil larvae may be seen in the compost and once the grubs ar parasitized, they stop feeding and die...... Vine weevil on our nursery have been almost readicated by using Nemasys."
