With the Rooterpot system you will find it so easy to take stem cuttings from trees, shrubs and vines and to produce a new plant, which would normally take three years to produce from seed or conventional cutting methods, in ONLY 8 WEEKS!
The Rooterpot system works on an old principle of propagation - air layering- without all the hassle attached to the old method.
Each Rooterpot comprises:
- a hinged translucent pot
- a black lid
- dark stick-on labels
Follow the easy steps below for easy stem cutting success and remember that for best results stem cuttings should be taken in Spring or early Summer:
- Choose a healthy branch, as upright as possible with some side branching
- Using a small sharp knife make two parallel cuts, 1/2" apart around the branch, just deep enough to score through the bark (close to a bud or leaf)
- Make a vertical cut between the first two cuts and gently peel the strip of bark away
- Cover the wound with rooting hormone
- Open the Rooterpot and site around the branch so that the wound is approximately in the middle of the pot cavity
- Close the pot and fill the reservoir with water
- Pack the inside of the pot carefully, so as not to disturb the root hormone, with moist, soilless potting mix (peat based)
- Water the mix well and cover the pot with the lid
- Slide the tabs on the lid into the slots on the outside of the pot to secure
- Apply the dark stick-on label to the outside. This will keep sunlight off the roots
- Record the start date on the label
- Check water once a week or as neede and add through the top of pot to keep moist and the reservoir filled.
- Rooting time will depend on the plant you are growing from and will also vary from one region to another, but after about six weeks you should inspect the progress and then at two weekly intervals. Gently peel the label back, if the roots are sparse and insubstantial, the branch is not yet ready to be removed from the motehr plant and the pot should be left in place
- Once the roots are abundant and reach the edge of the pot the branch can be removed by either using a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the branch just below the Rooter pot
- The lid should be carefully taken off and the pot removed so that the plant can be transplanted
- The pot and lid should be thoroughly cleaned and can then be reused
