The life cycle of the Chafer Beetle

The eggs of the Chafer Beetle hatch and start feeding on the roots of the grass from July until late September.  After this period they burrow deep into the ground and lay dormant under the soil before moving to the surface in Spring when they emerge as beetles and start the cycle over.

What does Chafer damage look like?

    • The tunnelling activity of the larvae causes the lawn to feel spongy and the birds as well as badgers have a feast causing more damage to the lawn
    • the grass grows slowly and yellow patches appear.  It is easily pulled up and there is little root growth.
    • Also the number of birds especially starlings pecking at the grass is indicative of grub presence.

How do I identify a Chafer Grub?

The Garden Chafer Grub is creamy coloured and approx 1.5 cm long.  They have distinctive legs and can be found in the root systems of both plants and lawns.  Often they are mistaken for vine weevils.

    Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer
    • contains a parasitic nematode Hetereorhabditis which kills the grubs
    • is harmless to children, pets and wildlife
    • not detrimental to the lawn area.
    • It is available in 2 pack sizes.

    When to apply

The pest is present from July to mid-September and nematodes should be applied during this period when the soil temperature is 12 degrees and before the grubs move deep into the soil.
