In 1987, the Scottish based company, Ronaash Limited, was granted a license for a patented Canadian system for the propagation of trees and shrubs. This unique plastic propagation tray with grooves to direct roots straight downwards, and hinges to allow opening for easy plant extraction, was marketed under the name ROOTRAINERS

Ronaash is now celebrating 18 years of successful business with Rootrainers, having sold more than 60 million cells throughout Europe, Africa and The Middle East. They can also claim to have pioneered the introduction of cell grown plants to Forestry nurseries in the UK.

Most Rootrainers are sold wholesale to professional growers, and the resulting plants are now specified in many landscape and forestry contracts. Alba Trees,  the largest cell grown forest nursery in the UK, growing over 8 million plants a year from 120 different species, use Rootrainers exclusively. Their Production Director, Rodney Shearer, commented, " We are delighted with Rootrainers. They are the best container for providing good root formation and for flexibility in cell volumes. We have purchased Rootrainers for the past ten years and are still using many of the original trays, making them very cost effective."

Ronaash offers support to both large and small growers, advising on the use of Rootrainers for a wide variety of plants, from strawberries to potatoes, and vines to date palms. They can also supply educational packs and have developed an export consultancy.

In a development unique to the UK, individual Rootrainer trays are sold to amateur gardeners by several mail order firms and at almost all the UK summer garden shows. They have been at Chelsea for the past ten years. Continued growth into the expanding European garden market is anticipated.

Ronaash has also launched its new product  at Chelsea - The Compact Rapid which has been designed and manufactured entirely by Ronaash Ltd.
